The Mandalorian season 3 finale finally references Grogu’s parents, while also giving Din and Grogu the relationship the fans have always wanted.

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for The Mandalorian season 3 finale.

After countless fan theories about who Grogu’s parents could be, The Mandalorian season 3 finale finally mentioned them. Grogu has had more development this season as a character than in any other. His Jedi training with Luke in The Book of Boba Fett greatly improved his mobility, to the point where he was crucial in helping Din Djarin and Bo-Katan Kryze defeat Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian season 3 finale. Grogu is no longer the helpless baby Din stumbled upon in The Mandalorian season 1. Despite his adorable nature, he’s become a formidable and fearsome opponent to be reckoned with.

Not only has he developed physically, but Grogu also got his own voice this season through the use of IG-12. By using Taika Waititi’s voice to simply say “yes” or “no,” Grogu was able to express—for the first time—how he feels through words. He was quick to use his newfound ability to break up a fight between Axe Woves and Paz Vizsla. But now that he has lost his IG-12 armor, he is back to his normal cooing and grunting, and since he is still unable to talk on his own, he is not able to take the Mandalorian Creed and graduate from his foundling status.

Grogu Would've Spent Very Little Time With His Parents Before Joining The Jedi

Despite his handicap, the Armorer tells Din Djarin that Grogu’s relatives are likely far away from Mandalore. Little is known about Grogu’s species and where he originates from, but The Mandalorian season 3 went a long way in filling in more of Grogu’s history. Since he is over 50 years old in The Mandalorian, he’s a little over 20 years old during Order 66 in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. Assuming Grogu spent more time at the Jedi Temple before the fall of the Jedi occurred, then he was likely taken from his parents sometime in his early adolescence.

While a decade or more is plenty enough time for a human to form memories and a bond with their parents, Grogu’s species ages differently. For Grogu, a decade flies by rather quickly, which is why he likely has few memories of his early life outside the Jedi Temple. Even his memories of Order 66 are clouded and were only recently revealed in The Mandalorian season 3, episode 4. Like most Padawans at the Jedi Temple, Grogu lacks any meaningful connection to his biological parents. Instead, he seems entirely content with Din Djarin as his parental figure.

Grogu's Parents Are Likely Dead (& Probably Won't Be Revealed)

As depressing as it may sound, Grogu’s parents are likely dead. George Lucas has always kept Yoda’s species a secret, which shrouds much about Grogu’s origin in mystery. Yoda refused to talk about his homeworld, so no one knows where in the galaxy Grogu was born or why he was taken from his parents in the first place. It’s possible some sort of calamity befell Yoda’s people, prompting him to rescue Grogu and bring him under his protection at the Jedi Temple. In any case, neither of Grogu’s biological parents are a part of his life anymore.

Given Star Wars’ reluctance to reveal details about Grogu’s species, it’s unlikely audiences will ever see or hear who Grogu’s parents really were. Regardless of whether they’re hidden on Grogu and Yoda’s homeworld or if they were killed, neither of them carries much weight for Grogu’s backstory. Instead, The Mandalorian seemed to focus on Grogu’s rescue from Order 66 as the first true traumatic event in his life. Now that this part of his backstory has been filled in, The Mandalorian will probably not bother going back further to show Grogu’s parents.

Yoda & Yaddle Almost Certainly Aren't Grogu's Parents

Yaddle in Tales of the Jedi episode 4

Many Star Wars fans like to believe that every notable character in the galaxy is somehow related to another notable character, which led rise to the popular theory that Grogu’s father and mother were Yoda and Yaddle, respectively. Given that Grogu, Yoda, and Yaddle are the only known canon members of their species, it makes sense why some would try to draw a connection between the three of them. While Star Wars hasn’t disproved the theory, it’s highly unlikely that Yoda or Yaddle were Grogu’s biological parents. If they are related somehow, it is most likely a distant connection.

The theory that Grogu’s mother was Yaddle falls apart considering it’s never been confirmed that they were even at the Jedi Temple at the same time. Yaddle had been a Jedi for centuries by the time Grogu was born, making it almost impossible for her to have secretly had Grogu during her service. Meanwhile, Yoda as Grogu’s father makes even less sense given it would mean Yoda abandoned Grogu after Order 66. So while Yaddle and Yoda could have been crucial in helping Grogu initially join the Jedi, it wouldn’t make sense for them to be his parents.

Din Djarin Being Grogu's Father Is The Best Parent Reveal

Din Grogu and Din Djarin The Mandalorian season 3 finale

Since Grogu’s parents are pretty much out of the picture for good, Din Djarin steps up and takes on the role of Grogu’s father. While it had been hinted throughout The Mandalorian season 3 that Din Djarin had adopted Grogu as his son, the finale makes it official. In order for Grogu to move on from his status as a foundling, Din adopts him, and the Armorer gives Grogu the name Din Grogu. With his new name, Din Grogu becomes Din Djarin’s Mandalorian apprentice until he is old enough to speak the Creed on his own.

At the end of The Mandalorian season 3, Din Djarin and Din Grogu are given a happy ending, as they can finally relax at a cabin on the outskirts of Nevarro city. Din Grogu no longer needs to worry about being sought after for his unique abilities, since Moff Gideon and the others who hunted him are all defeated. With The Mandalorian movie on the horizon, there are still plenty of adventures in store for both Dins. Din Grogu and Din Djarin are also likely to make an appearance in the Ahsoka series given the subtle tie-ins to Thrawn in The Mandalorian season 3.

Both Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have teased that there’s more in store for Din Djarin and Grogu in the future of Star Wars. But overall, The Mandalorian season 3 finale was a slightly rushed, but satisfying conclusion to the arc of Moff Gideon hunting Grogu. When Din Djarin first met him, Grogu was scared, helpless, and alone. Try and he may, Din Djarin couldn’t treat Grogu as just another score in his bounty hunting career. It took three seasons of The Mandalorian for it to happen, but it’s fitting that Din Djarin has finally adopted Din Grogu as his son.
