This skeleton is Cruel Summer's unique selling point: multiple timelines and dual perspectives. In Cruel Summer season 1, the show switched between the perspectives of Jeannette Turner and Kate Wallis in the summers of 1993, 1994, and 1995. The timeline is simpler in Cruel Summer season 2, focussing on just two years - 1999 and 2000 - but still switches between the perspectives of lead characters Megan and Isabella.
